One of my Ancona girls did not rush out to forage with the flock today! She just stood there blinking her right eye, and there is some swelling from the base of the bill across her cheek. Should I get her to the vet asap? Or what can I do at home?

Could a drake gotten hold of her? Might be best to have a vet check her out could also be an infection where she may need antibiotics. meantime keep her away from the others and quiet and warm you could try some Veterycin or saline eye wash to see if it helps her eye. Also Terrymycin eye ointment but it sounds like it's affecting more than just her eye.

Thank you. I don't have any drakes, and the other girls are all not bothering her. She's just floating around, or standing and taking sips of water. She's my most active and loudest duck, but she's like a Buddha right now. Must be in pain.

Could a predator have gotten to her? or could she have eaten something toxic? Poor thing, if you can take her to a vet That maybe the way to go. Can you look in her mouth just to make sure she hasn't got something stuck? Once on the goose thread a goose had chewed a piece of a stick and it got lodged under his tongue Always best to rule out everything.

I would get her to a vet - she may have been stung, bitten, developed a sinus or ear infection - and ducks will hide illness for so long . . . .

Meanwhile, try some mild saline solution to rinse her eye, or some Vetericyn.

I'll take to the vet. I'd like to wait for the avian specialist tomorrow, but I'm afraid to wait and so I guess I'd better get her in to the after hours clinic tonight.

She's a voracious forager, gets her bill into everything, so she probably got into something sharp or something.

Keep us updated on how she is doing.

I waited to take Nicola to the avian certified vet, but I am waiting to hear. She seemed better today, and I hate to think of her at the waiting all day at the hospital! Her sisters were very protective, running back into the pen to check on her when she didn't come out, and scolding me for sitting there watching her. I can only assume they are worried with her gone all day. :(.

Let us know when you hear. Bless.

She was diagnosed with an infection of unknown cause snd given antibiotics and pain meds. The hard thing is she has to be separated from her sisters fir 30 days! I don't understand why her antibiotic could be so harmful to the others.
