Swollen duck toe

Kristine, the vet said it wasn't bumblefoot. There was no scab, or cut or thorn, so she ruled out bumblefoot. That being said, she had no idea what it was.

I did do the epsom salt last night and and rubbed the area with a bit of neosporin. I think I recall that you can use iodine too. Has anyone used that? I have the orange red type.

Today the swelling didn't look like it increased, so that's good.

I also read I can use Vetracyn. Does anyone know if that might help?

Vetracyn is more for open wounds i think or wounds in general to help healthy skin cells grow and to prevent infection. If there isn't anything open or a wound, I wouldn't waste it. She may have sprained it and the rest and down time along with the tumeric and epsom salt baths will help. If you have a pool to keep in her own so she can rest it in water that would help too.

Thanks TearDucks. Her pen is not big enough for the pool I have. I've been taking her and her sister out of the pen several times a day to hang in the pool and when they are finished preening, I put them back in the pen.

I use a roasting pan in my pen, it hold three gallons of water. Big and deep enough to bathe in and change often given the right container dependin on your hose water situation or in winter. Anyway...you get the idea :p

It seems bumble foot is the case. Don’t worry it is not fatal and can Be treated. First of all make sure she is in a very clean inviorment and her cage is cleaned regularly. But she should be fine.❤️❤️
Hi Kristine,

The vet said it was not bumblefoot, since she didn't see the black scab, but now I read another source which said that bumblefoot starts in stages. In the first stage, the toe looks like a swelling, but may not be accompanied by the tell-tale black scab. That's exactly what I see on the bottom of my duck's foot - a shiny pink patch.

She's in her pen now, and she poops regularly there, although I am trying to bury the poop under the mulch. Her house, where she sleeps, gets fresh shavings every day. What else should I be doing to keep it clean?

Thanks!
