Hi all, I'm new to hens so I hoe you can help. We recently bought 4 isa brown hens, they have started to lay. The other day I noticed that one hen was pecking the others. Then we noticed that one hen has lost her right eye. I think its actually blind in one eye now, and rest of her face is swollen red and nasty. Help! I have washed it with saline solution but dont know what else to do.

It sounds like she needs antibiotics. You can treat locally/externally with Neosporin, but she probably needs oral med in her water. You should isolate her from the others, they will continue to peck at her if she has any type of open wound.
I have never had an injured chicken (YET) so maybe some one who has, can tell you what antibiotic, and how much/often to give it.

If you are up to giving an injection I would use Tylon 50. I have recomended it to several others just for the simple fact that it worked wonders with 2 of my birds so far. Most of your local farm stores should have it, it cost around $10.00 for a bottle. I had a turkey that had a respratory infection and looked HORRIBLE!! Both sides of her face were swollen and red, she could barely see and then the one eye totally swelled shut. I was told to give her a 1/4 cc injection, half of that on each side into the puff area. Then I waited 48 hours and gave her another. I was shocked, in a day or so after the second injection she was fine. I also had a young silkie attacked by a rat. One side of its face was swollen and it had blood on the top of its head. I washed it all up and then gave it an injection of about 2 tenths of a cc and in a couple days it was fine and running around. The swelling on the face went down very quickly. Just use a sterile needle and syringe, you can get those at the farm store too. Good luck. You dont need the oral antibiotics if you use this. It is more local and works much faster then trying to get them to drink the antibiotics. Jenn

Hi guys the drama continues here. I live in melton Vic Australia and apparently I can only get Neosporin from vet our large pet stores do not stock it as it is by presciption only. I will go and see if I can get tylon 50. Otherwise I have an appointment at vet.

Hi its me again Its all over for my chook. She had to be put down because one of the other hens pecked her eye out and the infection was spreading. so we put her down. If anyone out there from victoria australia please let me know what I can buy from farm stores to prevent lice and a cream for sores etc. Thanks again for your concern:

for meds and such...you are better off to ask at an australian forum... A very nice one is Ancy Vardys Backyard Chicken Forum... there is a sticky on where to buy medications in the Good Samaritan forum.. here is the link:
