Hi,

My buff's face is swollen on one side only. The other side looks completely normal. She is also moving and eating normally and seems fine other than this swollen half of her face. She is a bout 6 years old.

Do you have any idea what this could be? Should I separate her from the flock? Anything I could give her?

It's possible she just got something in her eye and rubbed too aggressively.

Do you see any area that looks like a bug bit or sting?

I would just keep an eye on it. I keep Terramycin on hand for eye injuries. Or if you have any you have used for dogs or cats that should be OK. I have a gel for animals and it's for mammals and birds.

I don't see anything but it is possible as I keep bees as well. Though I've not seen anything like this before. It's not just her eye either, you can see her cheek is swollen on the one side.

Can you get a photo of the inside of her beak? Is there a bad odor or lesions, yellow or white pasty material inside the beak?

Sorry I couldn't get a pic since I was alone. The inside beak looked ok, I saw a little dirt on one side (I think) but I didn't see any yellow or white pasty material, nor did I smell anything but I could only get like a foot away.

I'll try to get another shot/look this evening.

@Wyorp Rock hmm no picture still, but this morning I can see her breathing is labored. I can hear her breathing and her beak is slightly open perpetually. I guess it's probably a respiratory issue.

I suspect what I thought was dirt inside her beak is something else as it's still there. It looks like dirt smeared inside one side of her beak.

Still looks the same and is eating ok. Yesterday she was moving, scratching, and foraging, but I did notice her resting occasionally.

I'd try working on her eye, see if there's any pus in there that needs to be removed. Flush with saline, apply an ointment like Terramycin in the eye.

Look more closely inside the beak to see if there's infection, some type of obstruction, an injury, canker, etc. Be sure to look in the choanal slit in the roof of the beak/mouth too.

Found it very difficult to get a pic. Here is the best I got. It seems to be some kind of abscess. It's on the left side and the left side of the interior of the beak as well. It's gray and brown color, I didn't see white or yellow. Tongue and roof of mouth looked ok. Right side of face and beak still looking completely normal and I didn't smell anything.
