This is Jack my oldest chicken. Today I was going out to wet their dirt and cool them off since we are experiencing high 90° here is SoCal and I noticed she has a swollen head and comb. I have isolated her just in case but I’m not finding anything online that describes her symptoms. Aside from looking crazy she is acting totally normal! Please any advice or idea what this could be would be great.

A sting would be my thought as well, but check her right ear, since it looks very swollen. Check for infection, drainage or gunk in the ear canal with a QTip. Does she have any signs of respiratory infection? I would give her 1/4 tablet of Benadryl 25 mg orally today to see if the swelling goes down. Look around the yard and coop for any bees, or possibly a hole in the ground where yellow jackets may be swarming.

Hello Chollister6 What happened to your poor chicken? I'm asking as I've been posting about my pekin bantam who has developed something similar.

My research has led me to think she probably has a tumour in her pineal gland. It's been growing rapidly over the last month but she still seems active and happy and not in pain.
My vet has agreed to euthanise her when the time comes but so far so good.

Here's a photo showing a similar swelling to the one on Jack.

oh my, looking at that makes my eyes hurt. I'm sorry your chicken has that. Is that what the vet diagnosed it as - a tumor?
May be a silly question - I'm new at this -- how do we know if a chicken is really in pain or not? Just atypical behavioral changes?
Best of luck to both of your babies.
