I recently adopted/saved a hen and one of the legs is swollen, and I was wondering if anyone might have an idea of what I can do or what the problem might be. She walks OK, but she puts the leg affected up now and again. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome To BYC

Can you have someone hold her and take some closeup/clearer photos of the leg from front, sides and back? (all the way round the leg).

To me, it looks like she may have something embedded in the leg like a band, string or ?

I'd soak the foot/leg in a warm epsom salts bath, examine that front scab on the leg, see if it loosens up a little. Take some more photos of that too, once it's soaked.

Thank you for your response! I took some more pictures around the leg. I wonder if it is a band the previous owner didn’t remove. I just gave her legs an epsom salt soak (pics taken beforehand).

It sure does seem to have pattern where something is/was around the leg. Thank you for the additional photos.

Is vet care an option at all?

It's hard to say whether or not to begin probing about to see if there's something still around the leg or not. If there is, it's been there a while for it to be covered with skin/scales.

The 2 main areas that would concern me is the wound/scab on the front of the leg and it also looks like a start of a wound on the side.

The epsom salts soak is a good idea. I think I'd apply a little ointment to those too places as well. See if that front scab will soften up over a few days, maybe it will loosen enough and fall off so you can see if something is underneath.

@Eggcessive any thoughts?
