My dear sweet 3 year old bantam Cochin roo has a problem at his vent. It's all red and swollen and his tubercle is stuck OUT. It doesn't go in. He dribbles white urine all the time and I believe he can't pass a regular poop because his thingy is stuck out and in the way. I discovered it last night. It has one abcess which is about 1/8 in deep. I have cleaned it out and am using iodine and essential oils on it plus Preparation H gel to try to shrink the swollen tissues. I've trimmed his glorious tail so the whole area can dry. Naturally we have lots of rain forecast for southeast Louisiana. Dry is going to be difficult.

Has anyone seen this? Does anyone know what to do? I'm really concerned about him.

Hi Flockmaster

I saw that word on the internet. It's his sort of penis. It's red and bleeding and can't go back in. He leaks urine constantly because I think he can't poop and gets rid of as much as possible with urine. I'm cleaning him 3 to 4 times a day. Each time there is quite a bit of the white urine covering everything below. So far he's not getting better. I see your posts all the time. I'd really appreciate if you know anything about this.

A picture would be very helpful. When you say "abscess" where exactly is the hole? Near his vent, in his vent, on the edge?

It's getting a little better. The Preparation H seems to be shrinking his penis thing a bit. It doesn't go back in yet but he was able to poop a little bit this morning when I treated him.

Thank you all for your replies. I have a picture on my phone but I haven't had the time to post it. There are two abcesses on his tubercle/penis. It still doesn't retract. I am taking him to a bird vet today. I only have 9 chickens...all of them pets. I can't just cull him.

I think this happened because he stayed wet under his tail for a long time. He is a bantam Cochin...lots of feathers close to and right on the ground. I didn't realize that he was staying wet. It rains a lot in Louisiana. When this is all over I will have to watch him closely and keep him dry.

I'll post what happens with the vet.
