I didn’t know how to even begin to search for what is happening on this chicken’s feet. Saw it at a poultry swap 😲. Seemed to be walking steadily, slowly, painfully. The end of its toes were so swollen. Poor thing! Looked to be a buff Brahma roo at 6-ish months old.

I’m guessing fungal overgrowth? Or Staph infection from dirty bedding?

Anyone seen this before? Is it contagious? How would it be treated?

That appears to be frostbite. Has it been very cold where you are in the past month-ish? Or where the cockerel has been in the past month-ish?

I’m assuming it’s a local bird since it was a tiny swap meet. We’ve had some nights in the upper 20s but nothing bitterly cold.

thank you for the response! I had brought some birds that came back home with me and was worried it was some kind of foot rot that might be contagious and end up in my flock. This was my first swap meet too 😂

Frostbite occurs if the toes get wet or if they are not roosting where they can lie on their feet. Stepping in water or soiled bedding when temps are freezing causes frostbite. The black tips of toes and nails will eventually come off, but she should be able to survive with a nirmal life.
