Sugar, my 5 month old bantam Cochin pullet, has had a slightly swollen and very watery right eye for several days, but no other symptoms. She is laying consistently and has normal looking poop. She has no nasal discharge, no sneezing or other signs of respiratory distress. So, I have a few questions.

1) Is it an injury or an infection?

2) What is the best way to treat it? I just bought some terramycin ointment but am not sure if or how I should use it.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sorry about your chickens. She just looks like she feels bad. My guess is that she is having signs of a respriatory disease. You can apply the Terramycin eye ointment twice a day to see if it improves. It it gets worse with bubbles in the eye, sticky eye drainage, or sneezing, I would order some Tylosin antibiotic powder to treat her water for 3-5 days. It would also be good if anyone else gets sick. Here is a link for Tylosin:

Thanks you so much for your advice! I will keep a close eye (no pun intended) on her and the rest of the flock. I will definitely order the Tylosin if things get worse.

Is there an egg withholding period with the Tylosin powder? I noticed at the bottom of the product page it said Disclaimer: not intended for animals meant from consumption. Thanks

There is no egg withdrawal for tylosin powder.

"Tylosin—Some products that contain tylosin are approved by the FDA for use in laying hens (Table 2), and when those products are used in accordance with the label directions, there is a 0-day egg withdrawal.11 However, all of those products will be affected by GFI #209 and #213, which may result in label changes or affect their availability in the future. Tylosin is also approved for use in laying hens in Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom,16,18,19 and multiple studies58,65–70,a have been performed to evaluate the depletion of tylosin residues in the eggs of treated hens."
