Table Scraps

Tomatoes are fine. Not sure about the leaves. My chicks seem to leave the tomato plants alone.

Potato leaves are poisonous to humans, too.

Eggplants are another nightshade. The chicks eat those leaves.

I tossed some peaches out to the girls and they took them down to the bare pit. Clean as a whistle. I broke the first one open and ofter that they took the skin off and worked their way in. Yummy!

Bananas and watermelon are our favorites. Leftover bread is a huge hit. We ignore Cheerios and garden weeds.

every other day I fix big pots of cooked rice and chill in refrig. and next day during the afternoon , they see me coming , and OMG , they all lined up . The rice is chilled and it cools them off .... I also give bread . I have friends that go by the day old bread stores and pick up loads of bread for my chickens ... They love it .

BUT , I do limit them because I do not want their treats to interfer with the feed they need ...

I feed my chooks potato peels too and it doesn't bother them a bit. The only thing I won't feed them is dried beans.

My observant 13 year old asked me today why we can't feed chicken scraps to chickens. He wanted to know if it would actually hurt them or if it was just morally wrong. I said, "It's taboo in our country."

My birds are free ranged half the day and they eat whatever they encounter...if they can catch it!

They even eat the mushrooms growing in our yard which would kill humans. Birds aren't necessarily affected by the same compounds that we are. Chickens are not people!

Disease. That's how Mad Cow Disease started. They were putting cow meat in the feed.

Chickens are are not bovine. I don't know of any type of disease similar to BSE in chickens. If there was I'm confident that steps would be taken to prevent it.

Cannibalism is a human trait that we try to give to other animals. Animals eating their own species is quite common in the animal world.
