Tacky Coop and Run Contest 2011: Winners Announced!

One time utility shed, horse stall, storage, and now chicken coop. It's 60 years old and yes, it leans

Coop name: The sign I have on it (can't see in the picture) says "Mother's Cluckers"

Construction date: originally 1950, latest conversion to coop August 2010.

Materials: You name it, it's in there. Mostly ancient shed and scrap lumber and welded wire, even some hurricane fencing in front to help make it more dog proof (with welded wire behind it).

Front:

And the back:

Back part here is open storage, there is a back wall to the coop part.

Need I say it was converted using all junk from around the house? Well except the roll of wire I ended up having to buy.

I figure this tree here is insurance in case it tries to fall down

I just looooove this contest. And to think I was so sad today that I couldn't find a new idea at the Habitat for Humanity store. Now I have some "good ones"?! Keep them coming.

I'm so happy to know I'm not the only one like this. Who knew, therapy on a chicken website, awesome.

We were discussing the funny and good entries for this contest when my SO recommended I put mine on here. To my chagrin, it does look kind of tacky. But it's only temporary. The two older hens got moved to this when I got 4 pullets that needed to be isolated and contained. The older hens free range. Once the little ones are bigger and can defend themselves better, they may all go back together. In the real coop.

I call it Tarp City. Privacy fence makes up 2 sides. Scrap fence for the other 2. Dog house is the coop. Various cinderblocks and wood blocks to hold it up. Rubbermaid bin to keep food dry. The "nest box" is on the ground in the corner with some shredded paper and pine straw. I tried various crates and boxes, but she kept laying on the ground. At least the paper and straw keep the eggs from being muddy.

Can't compete with the U-Haul truck, though.

Awwww, so cute. Is that a little step for them to step on going into the dog house. It's so tiny and sooo cute! I love it!!! Is that an egg I see in the corner? I have to say that I love it. It's so cozy. You did a great job. It's also so neat and clean. Good job !

I keep showing my husband this thread. Last night he dreamed that he walked out the back door and found that I had taken a folding table, turned it upside down in the yard, then wrapped it up in aluminum foil, cut a door and window in it, and filled it up with chickens! Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!
I thought I was giving my man something in life to smile about, showing him photos from this thread, but apparently it's just giving him nightmares about what loony coop idea it's going to inspire in me.
