I'm new at this, but this seemed to work for me. Five days before hatch was due I put the drake in the chicken coup. The chickens were upset at first, but didn't mind after a day or two. Two weeks later I let dad back in with the rest. Donald didn't have a bath for a couple weeks, but seemed to not mind at all. The drake was fine and loved the chicken food and mom and babies did great. All were still safe and protected.
All mine are locked up at night too with the dogs for extra protection. I think each location and situation is different as are the predators. You have to do what is best where you are and what you have as far as protected space.
