There might be heaven only knows what that was growing in there on the floor? The space is great. I know your hens will love it. Yes I would love to follow your venture and future addiction into chickens. LOL I am continuously adding or changing something in my coop. Its never finished to suit me.

What part of the ctry. are you in? I am in the mtns of NC. Can you believe we had a snow shower today? Its gone now and the sun is back out. Crazy March weather.
I bought 4 EE's today and put them in a with abroody hen(Willow) that hatched three of four eggs I had under her last wk. She took them and tucked them right under her. She is such a sweet broody. Now she has 7 babies. I love this addiction. I don't think I have laughed as much or worked so hard on a project in a long time. Welcome aboard .

Right aboutnow I could use some of that, my 5 girls have not produced enough yet for the veggie plots and the neighbor would love to have that too!! I agree with the OP, if you can, maybe scrub with a diluted bleach solution, pressure wash the floor if you can......Your chickenswill love the space and safety of that big coop! Keep us posted....

We wanted to bring a power washer in and got ixnayed buy the owner. The barn is about 100 years old. Since the base is stone, it has held up pretty well.

If we did get in there with a power washer, I would have to do the whole barn to avoid a mold or mildew problem. I get the feeling that he doesn't want us messing with his goats or moving anything else around.

To some degree I have to say I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. I know I run the risk of the chickens catching something from the old group that was in there. However, my current girl free range in the corn filed that his hens would go into. So there is some sharing of germs already.

I think I could spray the coop down with a bleach solution though. Any chance the bleach residue would be harmful to the hens after say a week of drying?

Oh...and I am in Wisconsin.

Definitely spray it with bleach. When it is aired and dried the clorine gas will be gone and it will be safe. The Guy that checks for my npip certification told me I should do this. Also I had an errate chicken from next door and he told me to spray the area around the out side of my hens run and house with it. He said nothing was better for getting rid of nasties. It would also help prevent mold. I used it on the run last year one evening because of odor from wet soil. By morning it was gone but so was the odor. Good luck with your new chicks. Ok......so sprayed down coop today with bleach solution. Just confirmed I am picking up year old hens on Saturday from breeder. I will get a mix of Black Copper Marans, Barnevelders, Welsummers, Buff and Light Sussex.

Chicks still don't have a confirmed ship date. I was supposed to hear today.

I will take pictures at the breeders if she doesn't mind. I think she has a great set up. Also I will be cool to get some shots of all her breeds. If I don't have a chick ship date by then I may get some chicks too.

I plan to get a bunch of pictures as I get them settled too. So......plan for an update and some photos on Saturday and a ton of photos on Sunday!!!

I can't wait.......
