Hi guys!

I'm 5GodsDown from Belgium, that tiny thing in Europe. I've been following BackYard Chickens on Reddit most of the time, but since I'm looking to start my own flock I thought joining this site would be a better idea.

I learned to love chickens a few years ago when I wasn't doing too well. I took my car and drove a few countries over where I was taken in by an old woman on a small farm who mostly had purebred chickens. Over the course of a few weeks I learned a lot about taking care of chickens and I also fell in love with them. They were so peaceful to watch, some were even cuddly and I even remember a moment where a chick was acting all dramatic, but then I picked it up, laid down with the chick in my hands and we both fell asleep.

Now I'm doing much better and I own a house with a decent garden, so basically there's no excuse not to have a flock of my own! I was thinking of getting 3 Sussex chicks to raise, mainly for eggs and cuddles :p I'll buy them a nice little house and for the coop I have some poles and wire the previous owners left in the garden. I was thinking of making it pretty big with the option to put a separation in the middle for when I want to start breeding with other races.

I think I'm going to have my hands full reading through this site! :D

But maybe you can already help me with my first question. Say I get the chicks in the next 2 weeks, in the beginning of July I will go help that old woman on her farm again and I won't be home for 3 weeks. Getting someone to feed the chickens is not a problem, but I was concerned on the subject of socialising. I want to raise them and make them tame, so could leaving for 3 weeks when they've been with me for 2 months be a bad idea?

It is nice to hear that you are doing better!

Chickens are very good therapy

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow

I think it would depend on how much time your helper would spend with them. Will they be checking on them a couple times a day? Will they interact with them or just feed/water and leave?

Feel free to check out the links below for some interesting reading. Good luck on your adventures!

Hello, thanks for joining us on the BYC roost! :frow
Depending on breed and age some chickens can be difficult to tame. If you left them as chicks that young, they may be unsocialized by the time you get back. Younger pullets and cockerels aren't good at retaining their memory since they develop much faster.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

Glad you can finally start a flock of your own!
As far as raising tame chickens, each bird seems to have their own personality quirks, some are just more naturally friendly than others, even within the same breed. They also go through different "friendliness" stages as they grow. Sometimes your sweetest most lovable chicks turns into a flighty brat that won't be touched after a couple/few months. But usually once they reach laying age, they'll start to settle down and their true personalities develop. I don't think your time away will make much difference. Just handle them and talk to them as much as possible in the beginning, maybe teach them a special call... I'm sure they'll recognize you when you come back. Best wishes!
