Far away, in the Backwoods of Olde, a lone chicken coop lies. A circular yard sits silently around it in the stillness of the shadows of the early morning. Then, as the first pink stripe of dawn fans out across the sky, and the last owl and raccoon hole up in their dens after a long night, a song like no other arises from this mystic structure....and it begins as....... "WONK WONK WONK! LET US OUT! LET US OUT! WONKWONKWONKWONKWONKWONKWONK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (Bangs wings on coop door) Queen Meffer of Magnolia is ready to go outside! Not too far behind her, Prince Little Rooster of Cameron takes up his crowing: "ER-ER-ER-ER-ERRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!" Finally, when it's about that time of morning, we trudge out there to do the Queen's bidding. W undo the padlocks and swing open the Grand Door, and so begins another exciting day in Meffer's Queendom!
That's the Meffer, at left

One by one, out march the knightly greatnesses of the castle:
Queen Meffer,
Tawny the Guard,
Kludd the Princess,
Bird-Eye the Guard,
Buffie the Princess,
Lola the Princess,
Hedwig the Princess,
Dragonwings the Princess,
Mini Muffs the Princess,
B.B. the Prince and
Little Rooster the Prince!
The roosters begin to wash their spurs as they prepare for the Sunday Mornin' Royal Joust. The ladies do their own preps by running around foraging, getting in their warm-up exercise and getting in a good breakfast, for good energy. Kludd just decides to skip all the Joust drama and go sit on the box for an hour till she lays her egg. Meanwhile, Meffer does a good dash until she stops to yank some flies out of the straw, while Buffie darts after a wolf spider. The little hens (Lola, Dragonwings, Hedwig, and Mini Muffs) also dart around stretching their legs and looking for their shares. Bird-Eye scampers after a beetle, and Tawny pounces on a roach....oh no. She hears a thundering in the ground. The roosters are running! Out of nowhere, the Joust begins!!!! Meffer, a smaller hen, therefore more vulnerable to the Princes' blows, leaps onto the roost and Little Rooster tries to flap toward her. Then she outjumps him from the roost and starts to tear toward th coop, where she can strategically run circles around, to deter the rooster. But alas, Little Roo catches up and makes his fierce strike, and Meffer tries to scramble away, yet Little Rooster is much too big to escape the likes of. Thankfully, Guard Bird-Eye catches sight of this, and gives Little Rooster a nice peck on the behind, driving him off momentarily. Meffer blasts off to the side of the coop while Little Roo walks slowly for a moment, regaining his strength for his next attack. She runs into Dragonwings and Hedwig, strategic allies for the Joust. She quickly arranges an alliance. "Okay, since I'm Queen, I'll be the strategist." Meffer boasts. "Hedwig, you're the fastest runner, being a Leghorn and all. You can approach Little Rooster to distract him momentarily. Then, once Dragonwings and I are under the coop, you run like heck to join us." Hedwig considers the pro and cons of being bait, and decides that she has a good advantage as the fastest runner. She accepts. Hedwig creeps to the other side of the coop, where Little Roo is getting ready to take off again. She steps into his plain sight, and the Australorp Roo is off and running toward her! She dashes toward the door to the run, to keep him away from the coop. But....wait! As she whips in a loop to confuse her pursuer, she catches sight of the other Rooster, B.B.!!! He's caught up with her allies, and is blocking them off from dashing under the coop!!! Hedwig makes a dash for then flies onto the roost, jumps off, to where she is now flying right for B.B.'s back. She lands on top of him! With B.B. stunned, and Little Roo a distance away, courtsey of her roost leap, her and her allies have the chance to bolt under the coop. They see the rooster's feet walk by the gap between the coop and the ground. "Awww!" They whine. Ten minutes later, after the roosters have moved on to something else, the three allies crawl out form their saferoom and surround the two boys. They give them a few hearty pecks for being so rude, and shut them in the coop for a time-out. The Joust win goes to the hens!!!!! The roosters accept their defeat, so the hens agree to free them from their time-out. Foraging continues.
