I just received a quote for a 10x6 chicken coop... $2,023! I know lumber is sky high... no need to tell me that. But here is the crazy part... I'm thinking about paying it. But I honestly feel like a fool paying that much for a CHICKEN COOP! I was fine with $1500... and $1700. But $2k seemed a bit excessive. What do you think? Give me your story.
Bought this old coop for 150 re shingled it with leftover shingles, couple gallons of barn paint some caulk and a few new nails. It's my first one and I build for a living but I'm also gifted in being cheap. Twelve to fifteen 2x4s would cost as much as I've got in this coop. As nicely as I can with out upsetting the boss I've been try to get people to stop buying at such a high price it may seem counter productive but I have a heart and can't stand to see people screwed over

I gave someone an estimate to build a henhouse a few years ago. It was a copy of the one I built for myself and came in at over $2000. It's only 16 square feet and did not include any fencing, and that was before lumber prices were insane. They bought a pre-made henhouse. I don't know if they were happy with it. You get what you pay for.

My suggestion is to make it easy to clean ... either big enough to walk into and shovel out, or a removable floor. I opted for the latter. The floor of my henhouse is a 4' x 4' drawer that I slide out and dump into my compost. Then I blow out the dust with my leaf blower. It's also 4 feet off the ground, so I don't have to bend over to lift the drawer. Couldn't be easier. I only have 4 hens at the moment but I've had 6 in there. Give them enough roosting bar and outdoor space and they're pretty happy with a smaller henhouse.

This is cute but at 20 sq ft. Is only big enough for 5 chickens.
Now that it is usually only my wife and self eating eggs at home, 4 to 5 hens would be sufficient, but who can be satisfied with so few chickens to watch? Anyway, I share and cook a lot and have no trouble using eggs from a dozen or two. I keep telling myself that, while I struggle to not get more varieties and grow beyond my needs.

So how much do you think this would have cost to build under this over $70 or way over $70 I vote way over just ponting out how to find cheaper buildings..
I don't plan on having any thing but 2 - 4 Old English Games I just want them for pets. Underneath I'll have a small run and outside of that a bigger run that the coop will be in.

My neighbour is using a metal garden shed ($600 Cdn at Home Depot) and chicken fencing wire on metal pound in posts. It took us an hour to pound in the posts. Post pounder was $5 to rent. The shed kit took us four hours to put up. Fencing material cost $100. She bought plastic nesting boxes from Amazon. She will have two dozen chickens. Under a thousand and it’s a secure set up.
