Hi All!

Well my *girls* are finally starting to lay... well I am guessing that 2 of them are based on the number of eggs and the size difference. Since this has started a couple of them have gotten very noisy! They don't crow but kind of make this LOUD guttural dinosaur cry. Is this a roo in the making? or do the girls shout from time to time too? I enjoy most of their little hen noises but this new thing is not all that pleasant to listen to.

Oh one more thing... my chickens have been digging out little "nests" in the ground and laying their eggs there. I have tried to line these nests wil shavings or straw to make it a softer landing, but the chickens just kick it all out before they lay. Is this normal?

Thanks

My hens make an announcement loud enough for the world to hear when they lay an egg. There is usually lots of LOUD encouragement and congratulations from the others in the coop as well! I guess they are proud of themselves!

I am really hoping that mine use their "inside voices" when they start to lay, since I am not allowed to have chickens where I live.

The noises are normal, from what I've read...as mine don't make ANY noise at all when laying. Apparently they make the egg song noise when they want to be let out of the coop! Anyway, Mine kick all the shavings away and lay on the wood floor, never broke an egg.

Mine lay in their nest boxes. I put a golf ball in each box. Some people use fake eggs. I also used hay in my nest boxes but they were kicking it out along with the eggs so I use spanish moss I get off the trees. They seem content with that. I live in Florida so it is abundant here.

When my BPR's started laying (last fall) they would get so excited they'd make a ton of noise. Apparently an egg isn't a big deal any more because they have definitely quieted down.
