Tapeworm Deworming Questions

I have a couple of questions about deworming: for how long does the dewormer act in their system? (Just for the day you give it to them or a couple dayside longer?) and how long do you typically see the worms in their stool as the dewormer is working? Should they be gone from stools in a few days?

Wormers start to work right away. Certain types of worms may require continued worming for 5 days straight, it depends what wormer is used and what types of worms are being treated. You may or may not see worms in feces after worming. Most of the time they are digested as protein. Once birds are wormed, you should see health improvement anywhere from several hours to several days.
I prefer a "shotgun" approach when worming...using a broad spectrum wormer. It saves time and money rather than taking fecal samples to a vet every three months for testing.

I have a flock of 7 chickens. I found worms in some of the droppings. The Vet tested them and said they were tapeworms. My question is because I do not know which chicken is dropping the tapeworm segments and not all the droppings contain the segments, will the treatment hurt those not affected with the tapeworm. Secondly, you suggested using valbazen first but if that did not work use Zimectrin Gold equine wormer. Can you just go for the Zimectrin Gold equine wormer as a first choice? Thanks so much.

Welcome to BYC!

Equimax horse paste is what I would use. Dose is 0.16 ml for a five pound chicken.

It is 4 years since this last post. I have a pullet (about 8 months old) that I think has tapeworms and probably other worms as well. She is laying well, but underweight. I have Valbezen and was going to give her 0.5 ccs of that based on posts I've read. But, I see in this last post Kathy is recommending Equimax. I'm thinking I should try the safer Valbazen first, with 24-hour fasting. Is that still recommended by those of you like Cathy and Dawg who experiment a lot?
