Tapeworms

I have one bantam cochin with tapeworm fragments in poop. In Canada, all I have found for treatment is Eqvalan Gold which has 120 MG ivermectin and 600mg praziquantel. How much should I give my Bantam who has lost weight and should I treat all my girls even if there are no signs of infection?

Praziquantel dose for tapeworm is 4.54 mg per lb of body weight. So get a weight on your bird, and you will need to do the math to see how much praziquantel is in each gm or mg of the Eqvalan Gold, and how much for your birds weight. You will dose once and then repeat that dose in 10 days. For tapeworm you only have to dose the ones that have it, so if the others have no signs, there is no need. There are some places that say to use a 'pea sized' amount. Don't measure that way. Use an oral syringe and measure the amount, 'pea sized' is very subjective and can result in under or over dosing.

Thank you for your detailed response. I did just try to dose my hen by putting some of the paste on mealworms and while she ate two of them it appeared to me that most of the paste was left on her beak, which she then proceeded to wipe off in the dirt. I have read that the paste is not very water soluble, so I am not sure how to get this into her (she refused it when I put it on a piece of bread). not sure what my other options are? My bantams are picky eaters anyone have any suggestions.

You can use an oral syringe and give it to her that way. I will attach a link below on safely administering oral medications. Depending on the actual volume given, you can give some, let her swallow it, and then repeat til the entire dose is given. Just hold her, or wrap her in a towel to hold her wings, pull down on her wattles to open the beak, give the meds. See this:

As you were so helpful earlier regarding this tapeworm thread, I wonder if you have ideas around what i should do to safely dispose of the chicken poop that has tapeworm fragments in it. I've been keeping it in a big bag in the barn as it's freezing out right now and not smelly, but I don't want to put it in my compost or throw it anywhere that other insects will eat and then pass on the tapeworm eggs to the next creature that eats it. What should I do with all the contaminated pooh?
