TB owners?.. not TBs but appys and they are home! update 4/11 NEW PICS

My mares have been home for a bit now and I thought I would share some pictures finally...Its been going really well, having our 1st farrier visit tomorrow unless its cancled due to rain we are supposed to get....Poor Lacy dear (the grey) is going to have to be sedated...She does not really like her feet handled...Other then that though she is a doll and I am really glad I took her as well as Pie...I decided on keeping Lacy home for the rest of the month to sort of bond with her before she goes off to training, I think that she has really come out of her shell having her 'own person' to lavish attention on her rather then just being a horse hanging out in a field..

Pie has also come a long way, she was a bit pushy at first with all the attention she was not used to but now with regular handling she is very gentle and great to work around...I dont think she looks sad anymore like some people though lol...

So here are some pics...Dirty still though after an hour of grooming

I think that Lacy is going to be that ugly yellowish color forever...She wont tolerate a bath at the moment and its too cold anyways...Anyother ways to whiten her up? Like a spray?

Also anyone have an idea as to what color Pie is? She was much darker before I started attacking her with a shedding blade daily and I am not really familliar with appy coloring...She still has some shedding out to do but looks like she is lightening up everyday...

Both are lovely and look like they really like each other.

As for the color of the darker one, it's hard to tell as she has her winter coat and the winter coat can be quite different from the summer coat. Sometimes spots look much better defined in the summer coat.

But she looks like she is a brownish-liver colored chestnut with roaning and spots.

Roan means that there is a mixture of color hairs and completely white hairs, but the horse sin't going grey as it ages. The amount of white stays pretty much the same over time.

With appaloosas, the roan pattern can occur with spots as well.

Glad you've got them now!

I am sure you can get Lacy over her feet issue with just good consistant calm work, a little every day.

For Pie, pattern-wise she is most likely snowflake or frost but you'll have to see how she sheds out. Color-wise, I guess my first guess from the photos would be brown or dark bay (with the heavy roaning of her pattern on top of it, I mean) but would not rule out grulla or dark liver chestnut or even black. Would need accurate-color closeup of fur; also waiting til summer coat would help.

Lacy is presumably either a few-spot leopard, or *any* pattern of App with color gone grey (you could tell this in the summer when she is soaking wet b/c the darker markings will be faintly visible on the skin beneath the wet hair). I would tend to guess the former if these are 'real' App breeders b/c App breeders usually try to avoid breeding to horses with the grey gene, b/c it makes the pattern disappear; but, people sometimes do dumb things (from a color genetics standpoint) so I would not rule it out. If she IS a few-spot leopard, it is worth getting her eyes checked yearly, as they are extra prone to moonblindness and it is best to catch it early if it should arise.

As a side note, please, run a third line of electric tape on there (halfway between the existing ones), the current setup is an escape and/or accident just *waiting* to happen. (It invites the horses to stick their heads between the existing lines, and when they get zapped their head is so far thru that they either squirt forward THRU the fence or get all tangled up in it). Make sure to test the fence daily with a good fence tester to make sure it is always carrying enough 'zap'.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Funny you should mention the fence, I am heading over now to put in a line of electric tape as the third line while I wait for the farrier to come. Only was using two until I got paid again and had some time to put it up.

The vet said she is pretty sure that Lacy is a few spot leopard and actually took a look at her eyes when she took blood. She gave her the all clear and said that they looked fine but I am going to have my primary vet take a look when he comes out to do shots in a month or two.

I am also going to have to retake some pics of Pie, Im looking at the photos I posted yesterday and she looks way way lighter in them then she does in person. It was a pretty overcast day yesterday too so I dont think they are a good repersentation of her color. She is also shedding out much darker then you can really see in the photos. I almost want to say that she is a blue roan....We got one into the barn where I work yesterday, a perfect blue roan QH gelding and her color is similar to his but obviously much more spotty. I will try and get some new pics as she sheds out so I can get a better idea. Not that it really matters what color she is!

Thanks all again for the help and support, might have ended up with the moon blind appy gelding and the lame paint draft mare if it hadnt been for the advice of some BYCers! My whole family thinks that I am crazy taking on horses (not very many animal people here other then my aunt whom I own the horses with) so its nice to have some people who are not trying to discourage me. I have wanted a horse like crazy since I was a little girl and Im just really glad that I was able to make it happen and have some good solid advice to follow as well.

Just wanted to share a quick updated photo of Pie and Lacy. Have had them for about 3 months now..

Pie-Pretty sure now that she is a blue roan?

Lacy is not as broke as we origanally thought so we are treating her as unbroke...this is her first saddling.
