Thanks for the info. I was looking into the Asutralorps but I haven't heard of the Dominiques. It turns out that a family at school will donate some eggs that will be a barnyard mix. I thought that would be good for the sixth graders since hopefully it will provide the most diversity in the eggs. Thanks again for the help!

If you like the idea of raising Orpingtons, you would also like Australorps and Dominiques. I'm getting 2 Australorp chicks in March and it sounds like they're a lot like Orpingtons but they come mostly in black. I recommend Dominiques because they are incredibly friendly and docile, although they do not have that "fluffy yellow chick" look. I think that's good though because most of the sixth graders I know think that all chicks are yellow and all chickens are white.
I am not saying that you should get these breeds instead of Orpingtons, just that you would like them.
