Final Update for Autumn:
Hens: 4 gold Comets, 3 white Leghorns, 1 Snoodle
I know all four Comets and all three Leghorns are laying. I don't think Snoodle is.
I was told to check her vent; moist means laying, dry means not laying. I checked; it looked dry, but I couldn't catch another hen to compare to, so that will have to wait.
Roosters: 1 half gold-laced Wayndotte and half white Leghorn (he's not laying lol)
He is, however, fertilizing almost all the eggs I'm cracking for breakfast, which is just as good. =)
So, I have a total of 9 chickens.
I'm getting enough eggs not to have to buy them for breakfast at all.
Current Plans:
DS is expecting some eggs to begin his flock. I'm working on getting an incubating situation set up for him. =)
We'll build them what they need as they get older; I'm going to let him do a lot of the work, I'm not just going to do it all for him.
I plan on hatching out a bunch of eggs when I can.
I want to increase my laying flock; I'll just choose which week I'm going to start, and hang onto enough eggs to hatch.
I need to find out how long hatchery Leghorns lay, then I'll start culling my non-laying hens.
I'll keep a rooster or two, so that I can have fertilized hatching eggs whenever I want them.
I'll cull the rest of the cockerels as we want them for dinner.
I think that's about it.
As usual, if anyone has any information that might be helpful, please share it; I greatly appreciate all the help I can get!!! =)
