Welcome to #TeamCrossbeakAmber

This thread is for my Easter Egger (EE) pullet Amber. She has crossbeak.

My favorite picture of Amber that I took today.

Amber was named after Copper-Amber, a troublesome, funny, lovable EE hen I had a few years ago. As a day-old chick, I thought Amber looked just like Copper-Amber did as a chick, so that's why I instantly named her after her. Much to my surprise, Amber would be much different than Copper-Amber in more ways than one. On my way home from buying seven little adorable pullets, I discovered that Amber was Crossbeak.

Amber was noticeably a Crossbeak at a couple of days old.

I was very disappointed about Amber having Crossbeak. I didn't want a Crossbeak chicken, especially one as bad as I knew Amber will be. I didn't want her anymore. In fact, I wished I had noticed her Crossbeak at the store, because I would have left her there. But then, after a while and thinking, I came up with something. If I hadn't ended up with her, who would of? Would anyone else that could have gotten her know anything about Crossbeak and if they did, would they have my same resources and knowledge? After all, Amber is the third noticeable Crossbeak I've owned. Just she's my worst case of Crossbeak.

A picture showing how bad Amber's Crossbeak is.

Amber has been delayed compared to my three other EEs. One of the things she's been delayed in is coming up to me. Within the past week, Amber has been jumping up onto my lap, and will stay there. She now loves being in my lap, which makes it hard when I'm trying to catch my other chicks and she's there. I have discovered that she hates me taking pictures of her. It's so hard to get a good picture of her, and even harder when I'm trying to get a good face shot of her beak.

(You don't need to do all three if you don't want to. One will be fine to show your support. :) )

If house chickens wasn't a bad thing (not good for your health and chickens needs a flock and to act/live like chickens), I could easily see Amber becoming one. 😅 Because she comes in so often (about every two weeks) for her beak trim/filing, she's gotten really used to my house. When I set her down to get set up, she walks around like she owns the place.

I have a slight concern about Amber's upper beak, but I don't know if this is normal for a crossbeak. I noticed it on her last beak trim/filing, and was hoping to see it gone by this beak trim. It wasn't. I wanna say beak rot, but it could be just where her beak is rubbing? Either way, it appears like she's lost a few 'teeth' (the white things on the roof of a chicken's mouth) because of it.

@JustBabyMargo, have you ever seen anything like this on your crossbeaks?

(Picture of Amber's beak in the Spoiler. Put it there for those who might not want to see it. :( )

She is just adorable! Reminds me of my girls, they act like they own everything, me included.

I have not seen that on my girls, but I will check their beaks tomorrow, if I remember. One of mine does often get gunky stuff stuck in parts of the inside of her beak, I clean it out every time I trim. I’m not sure what it is, but hopefully it’s nothing serious!

Thank you for your response! I probably wouldn't of noticed it either if I didn't look there during her trim. I usually see the gunky stuff towards the side of her beak. If I'm not able to remove it when I first see it, I usually can get rid of it by the next trim. But this here is something different.
