I saw this listing for these "ViewSonic" computers on ebay:

Thing is, these aren't ViewSonic PCs at all. I have a nearly-identical Intel Atom variant of these, and they're essentially generic PCs made by Foxconn for a manufacturer to slap their name on.

These AMD ones do look like they might perform better than the Intel ones. These have USB 3 whereas the Intel ones have USB 2. Otherwise, they're identical.

I found a photo of the insides of one and these use DDR3 as opposed to the DDR2 used by my Atom one.

This is my Dad's old laptop:

It's the Fujitsu Lifebook P5020D.

This laptop gets so much right. There is a thumb for scale in the photo. This is a very small laptop. And yet, it has TONS of functionality. It has USB. It has a DVD drive. It has a CF card reader. It has a modem port, and an ethernet port. It's go EVERYTHING you might need, in one small, portable, and slightly chonky package. My only issue is that the VGA port uses a proprietary adapter, but otherwise this thing is very nice. And, unlike lots of other small laptops, the keyboard and trackpad feel great. The keyboard even has some pretty solid tactile feedback on keypress.

My Dad really likes small and functional devices like this one, and so do I. This laptop is his gold standard for laptops, and after messing around with it for a while, I can see why. It has literally everything he could want in a laptop in it. I haven't seen modern devices of this size with as much functionality as this thing has.

Fujitsu clearly went for a well-balanced divide of function and form for this laptop. It looks fantastic, stands out, and does all of that without impairing its functionality. The little display by the power button is visible even when the lid is shut, something I don't recall seeing any other laptop I have do. It's these small design choices that make this laptop special.

And as is obvious, this thing was made to last. The wear on the palmrest shows it. My Dad used this thing for a while, and was still using it up until around 2017-2018 or so for some very basic things. I took the drive out of it and tossed in an SSD for the fun of it and it's now quite speedy on top of all of that. I think it takes about thirty seconds to load into XP.

I've still got some tests I want to run on this thing for the fun of it, but overall it's quickly becoming one of my favorite pieces of tech.
