Whitney,

I think the support is here but it is mixed in with a multitude of views. This is a chicken forum with members of all types and as many different reasons for raising chickens. Some of us have them as pets, even house pets. Some of us have them for eggs only. Some of us raise them for meat. Some of us reaise for many reasons. We have rabid vegans and rabid carnivores.

Don't be discouraged. This is really a friendly place, just sometimes oppinionated (sp?). Be prepared for all views, some supportive and some not so supportive.

What he said.

You did the right thing! I would have done the exact same thing in your shoes when I was your age. Do not feel bad. We raise our own birds and have to kill the extra roosters and it is a very grave thing. You really have to be ready to kill an animal, and if you are not ready to do it (or be a part of it) there is no shame in that. I think you have learned a very important lesson from this and you have gained respect for food animals. The class wasn't all bad.

I think what you did was very brave.

You did what you felt is right. That is a very hard thing to do when both peers and teacher were doing something you did not agree with.

Just one question, was this a meat bird? Or a heritage type breed? Because if it is a meat chicken not killing it will probably mean it will live a few more months and die of a heart attack anyways, then its wasted.

You know something, I really like you, and your forwardness, and your humorous posts. In this instance, I wish you would remember you are talking to and about a 16 year old child. I am sure she is not nearly as educated about chickens as some people on this forum are. Hence, I am asking you to give her a break and try to be kind with your words. Please.
