Teenager refuses to kill her chicken for a class project

I don't care about her processing the meat either that is her choice and I do feel she is at an appropriate age to decide that for herself.

I am just a little upset that she was uneducated about the kind of bird it was. The fact that maybe the bird would rather die by being butchered at that designated time then suffering to what ever age it can manage to live to till it does die seems cruel to me and inhumane in itself. The bird has no voice in this matter.

Also some people are thinking it was all a ploy to advocate to not eat meat or butcher your own meat.

she was only thinking about herself and her own interests, not was was best for the bird.

I could care less if she doesnt want to process meat, that is her own choice and I respect that. I was not trying to make fun of her. The part that kinda threw me was that she was unwilling to hear the other side of the story.

She is 16!!! Give the girl a break. Let HER decide what is right for HER.

What about what is right for the bird??

I have to say..
Who says the bird is going to die? Lots of folks have raised them on here...
And if it dies on her... Life lesson learned for her, isnt it?
Personally i'd rather be fat and die of a heart attack... then have my throat slit...
I already have the fat part covered..

But it also may live! Ya never know!

It MAY live, but there is a higher chance it will not. And it might not have a heartattack first, its legs could give out and become crippled. If she isnt ok with killing animals that it could suffer for a long time before having the heartattack.

I'd say she's heard it plenty by now.

Why not address that with a lot of people on this board who don't take adequate precautions for the health and safety of their animals? There are COUNTLESS threads in the predator section that could be the start of that discussion. Attack after attack by fluffy the family pooch who would never have harmed a feather off the head of a bird, then suddenly goes berserk and kills one, two, or ten birds -- or the whole flock.

Thread after thread about people who let their birds free-range, then come in whining and crying about hawks, coyotes, fox, dogs, etc.

Perhaps instead of so many people venting so much anger at a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD who extended the life of one chicken through whatever means she felt she could, they could go vent at people posting in the predator forum whose own actions at not taking care of their animals properly helped endanger not just one bird, but an entire flock.

Well...then... she'll have to THEN make the decision to either kill it herself... or bring it to a vet and have it done humanely. (when and IF that time comes)
I highly doubt she'll just let it sit there and suffer with no working legs...
lets not be dramatic about this...
But..Yes, it WAS wrong to steal the bird though...

IF that time comes do you think she'd be able to have to bird put down? Even by someone else?
