Then to hand a knife to a school age child, (which by the way is against the law now)

No its not. They use knifes all the time. From dissection to eating lunch. Most schools teach kids to use steak knifes in kindergarten.

Nothing there expressly says 'Slaughter of a Live animal", which should be included to assure students know what is going on. Lab instruction could be anything from examining an already dead animal to running a computerized dissection. Exploratory activities and Meat Specialist fall under the same idea, no hands on work just a field trip and a lecture.

Between that an this if ya didn't think Slaughter of a Live animals might be part of it then it is because you didn't want to know. I know I asked questions about every class I signed up for back in the day.

Well maybe I read past it, but I didn't see where it stated that the class would be given chickens and slaughter them at age. The problem isn't what is implied about the course, it is the technicality of not saying 'Slaughter of a Live Animal'. Technicalities are a big issue. People don't like to read fine print, especially teens who really just want an easy class to pass. Saying that you will slaughter a live animal should be in the basic course description to prevent incidents like Whitney's actions.
To prevent any issues a permission slip should be sent home to parents when the student signs up for the course. If they don't have permission to participate in the project but allowed in the class then they can have an alternate project.
People can sue over damages from hot coffee they placed in their own lap, parents can sue for the tiniest issue with a school system.

First of all I will say up front that I just read the blog but I haven't read the thread. This means I'm not responding to any posts that have been made and I might be saying things that have already been said.

I found the blog to be extremely biased.

Animal Science and Food Production class? Sounds like processing might be a part of the class. Since it is a high school class was there a syllabus and if so was the syllabus detailed enough to let the students know what was going to happen? I know the blog says in effect that the students found out too late to do anything about it. What? they were told the day of the class?

Permission slips should have been used or at least the parents should have been informed one way or another but as most of us with kids know, notes to parents don't always make it to the parents.

How much is left out of the story? Did the teacher tell the students what was going to happen and the students failed to take note? Giving your project a name? You are in an animal science and food production class. What did you thing was going to happen.

Bloody clothes all day is out of line.

Animal cruelty? My foot. Some people have chickens for pets, others have them to produce protein. These were protein producers.

I think what we have here is a wide eyed idealistic teenage girl that didn't know what she was getting herself into. I applaud her for her high ideals but also chastise her for not being informed before she got into that situation.

I might have more to say as I read this thread.

OK, are you saying I should tone it down? I don't think anything I have said is any more harsh than what others have said.

Also, after watch the news report I think she did know what she was getting herself into. I'm not trying to bash or flame, I'm just calling it like I see it.

Let's go this route and discuss Sex Ed and family planning.

Students can learn about Sex without having sex at school. They can learn about putting a condom on a partner without practicing it at school. They can learn about Diaphragms without trying one on at school. And, they can learn about HIV & AIDS, herpes, etc. without experiencing the actual diseases. If my son signed up to take a Sex Ed class, I wouldn't assume the school was going to make him have sex (at school or elsewhere) or watch classmates have sex at school! Nor would I expect them to require him to impregnate a female student so that he could learn where human babies come from.

From everything I have read (not solely the article linked here) there was no course description prior to students signing up that even implied there would be slaughter involved. Students can learn how food is produced without killing animals OR having it done in front of them.

Thank you Rozzie for Stating that so well. I agree with every example you gave.
There is NO need to teach a child under the age of 18 how to kill a living animal in a food production class, school is for learning not for killing.

Thank you. I have been sitting here all morning reading this thread and trying to figure out how to say something without putting my foot in my mouth and becoming over emotional. This sums it up. Required, informed, not informed, life lesson, right or wrong...WHATEVER....not the place to teach this sort of thing. They may be old enough to understand all this and make their own decisions but they are still minors. I'm just thankful for the teacher and administrators that this class was not at my school....it wouldn't be a pretty scene when I walked through the doors to discuss this with them
