When untying my boots this morning coming out of the coop, I noted some really small bugs on my boots. There were several of them. I have religiously used Diatomous Earth on the coop floor. What do you think this bug is? It seems to hop just a bit, it is not a flea, it is smaller than that. Help!

There are annoying little gnats called mold gnats. They do fly but also jump around. I hate them. Could also be fruit flies, maybe.

For the most part, DE is pretty useless at killing bugs. Get sevin or permethrin or other insecticide labeled for use in animal premises.

So I am getting the feeling that DE has a reputation (internet fueled) that dwarfs it's actual effectivness? Kind of like most natural (green) remedies on the internet that promise setting us free from commercial solutions but only deliver about 10% effectiveness.
