I don't have my kids answer the phone the way I was taught, which was "Hello, this is Karen Last Name", because I don't like callers knowing who they are. Hello, or Hello, Last Name Residence are acceptable. If they call someone else they are expected to identify themselves. I hate it when people leave long detailed messages, don't identfy themeselves, or rudely ask who's this.

We were taught as children to answer the phone "Last Name residence". Even though I'm almost 40 I still answer my parents' home phone like this. At home I answer it with a simple hello. At work it is "Good morning/afternoon, this is CityGirl." (Except I use my real first name...

My favorite communication gaff so far would be the students that send me emails and don't put their name in there anywhere. Later they are all indignant that I didn't return their email. I'm sorry. I don't know who you are!

Oh, don't forget the ever popular, "is so and so there?" My DH's response, yes. Nothing more, just yes. Long silence usually follows. Caller would finally say, "well, can I speak to them?" Oh, you want to speak with them? I just thought you wanted to know if they were here! You should have said so!

I have tried to instill telephone manner in my children.
If I'm unaware of who is calling (we have caller ID) I'll be formal "Owen Residence" otherwise it's "Hello?"

Never ask who I am, If you called ME!... always present your name first!

And a pet peeve of mine is those that will call and inquire if we called them as my number came up on their phone. They will ask Who are you! ext. and are extremely rude.
I'm sorry yes it is my phone # but sometimes we will have a guest or one of the kids friends use the phone, We are a family of 7 people. I have no idea if anyone of these other people called you and or why. Let alone Know who you are.

My oldest DDs friends call and if she isn't inside I just don't answer it (call-ID) and they will leave the most bizarre messages on the machine.

Once 2 of them had called (3-way) and at the beep they break out in song "Womanizer, womanizer, your a womanizer BAYbaaa" My dh and I hit the floor laughing so hard! I saved that message for weeks because it just sounded so hilarious. I always tell my DD do NOT call and leave messages like that on other peoples machines but I have to admit those girls give me a huge laugh at their messages. Sometimes they will break out in the softball chants " I see a hole out there, I see a hole out there, So hit the ball out there....." Just off the wall crazy stuff!

Have you ever called someone and they have left a message on their own answering machine (the greeting) and made it sound as if they are answering and talking to you......
