I'm starting to think this might be what I want instead of a Buff Orpington. I never gave this breed much thought until I noticed some comments about them here on BYC. If you have one, tell me about the temperament, etc. For some reason, My Pet Chicken says they are not very hardy during the chick stage. I wonder why? Otherwise, they seem to be wonderful, gentle, docile birds.

I was hoping to get some good comments tonight. I am learning that not many folks have this breed...they are listed as rare.

I have a faverolle rooster. He is gentle almost to a fault, but if the cat comes in the chicken coop he chases it out. A friend of mine is going to give me some sf hens this fall. I'm looking forward to breeding some. His hens are very gentle too and lay an egg almost every day.

I have two girls mine are friendly they are kinda loners and sometimes people have problems with them if they are other aggresive chickens. I really like mine they are my second favorite breed next to my Marans. Mine are about 16 weeks now.
Good luck

Hi!
I hatched Salmon Faverolles a couple years ago.
They were non-thrifty from hatch and had to be repeatedly 'nursed back to health' and all died before they were 6 mo old.
That is my only experience with them.

I'd worry that rare *might* translate to small flocks that are severely inbred.

Good luck with them if that's the breed you choose.

mine were good but they were from a hatchery and they were just as thrifty as my other chicks. Dipsy where did you get yours?

Hi
It's not an issue because I read she sold all her stock.

Good luck with your Faverolles
