Crazy or not it is better to keep them in a coop than in your basement, utility room, garage, and in a brooder in the kitchen.

But then again, you may not need an additional coop. You may just need a much larger coop. Multi-story, with multiple entrances and runs etc. They only need about 3' of head room, but make it 4 feet so you can kneel while cleaning it out, or retrieving errant eggs.

(You know you could go throughout the city and find abandoned houses and keep your chickens there.) After all they would help keep the weeds knocked down.

That depends, what kind of chicken was it? Was it a hen or a rooster? Was it a hybrid or purebred?
