Tell me why you keep Roosters...

I live in town and technically can't have roosters but my silkie turned out to be one. My neighbors love hearing him and all said they would like me to keep him. He's not very loud at all.
It's funny to hear all these stories about roosters protecting the flock because I have never experienced any of that! Django will be the first one to hide, girls or no girls, if something startles him. And as for aggression towards people, I've never seen that either. I know silkies are a more laid back breed but he is just like the hens except he crows. Especially when he hears my car pull up.

I keep rooster for a few reasons. They are good at protecting the girls, I show chickens and love to show the roosters most of all, i love to hear them crow, and I breed chickens. I have a little cockerel who is blind in one eye, he is a sweet heart and needless to say is spoiled, he gets way more attention then the others. For the most parts I leave my roosters alone and let them do there thing. I will hold my bantams, but its not worth the effort to try and catch the big ones. SOme of them dont like me to mess with them anyways

Have you checked your local laws? In most jurisdictions that I am aware of, a police officer has no right to tell you to get rid of an animal. There is a due process requirement, including warnings and citations before the courts will tell you to get rid of it.

I remember one similar case where the local animal control office was pursuing a woman for having a rooster in a non-agricultural residence. The problme was, it was a laying hen who had taken on the protective duties of the rooster and crowed occassionally. It is a fairly common thing in a roosterless flock. Ultimately, she won her case, but it goes to show many, including law enforcement officials, do not properly know all the laws for their area.

Thanks for your input, the person who reported my motorhome I believe first called the police and then called the city code compliance officer, we are now waiting for the code compliance officer to send us a violation notice with penalties for noncompliance attached. Although my wife is very nervous about this since she spoke to the police I and my boys would love to keep the rooster as he is a great addition to our backyard and we love to watch him and also raised him from a chick, so he is now a beloved pet. Looking for information on anyone fighting the blanket no rooster rule within city limits we are on a large lot with only eight immediate houses no backyard neighbors as we have a creek and a trail in our backyard. We also have a dog park three houses away where I believe the complainer heard the rooster and is one of those who likes to report on his neighbors when they are breaking code compliance issues if it was my next-door neighbor complaining I could see there being a problem but my immediate neighbors are very cool and some also have chickens. I am going to try and contact the code compliance officer that I spoke with about the motorhome as I believe he will be the one sending me a notice and would like to head them off and let him know I am on his to do list. Don't know if that will help my case but we are on good speaking terms. Thanks again for any help you can offer, Dave

this is exactly why i will never live in town. some people just like to make big deals over nothing. I think people should be allowed to have roosters. One time I had to stay in town for 2 weeks, couldnt stand it, but then again I have always lived in the country. I hope you get everything worked out and get to keep your rooster

P.S. I wish this freakin' BLING RING commercial would stop popping up in the middle of my reply. Backyard Chickens, do you really need the advertising money that badly? You still have plenty of ads on your site.
LMAO I keep thinking the same thing!!!!! hahaha I started laughing as soon as I read this!!!

Thanks C, we live in town because our kids can walk to school for the next six years which is awesome, although it's been a dream of mine to buy land in the country we found some nearby but they want 700,000 for only 20 acres ,that that may be doable if we could build houses to rent out and help pay for the land but I'm estimating the taxes might be 700 a month which is nuts. Thanks, Dave
