Tell me why you keep Roosters...

Hi if there is No fighting. I don't see why ypu don't keep them . To tell you the truth. I like more than one beacause if your hens are in danger the is a bigger defence barrier

Well I got my notice as expected from the city code compliance zoning official he says I have 10 days to get rid of our rooster named shade and move our coop farther away from the neighbors fence to meet locals restrictions. I am so very tempted to go by land outside in the unincorporated part of town but it is very expensive. We love our rooster and love seeing and hearing him in the back yard I'm sure my children will be very upset. What else can we do though when we have been reported by a nosy neighbor who does not like the sound of roosters

That is exactly what I am doing: buying property for the flock. I found an 8.26 acre plot only five miles from my house; escrow closes tomorrow and the first coop build will be started by Friday.

I'll keep the most senior hens, the dominant rooster and the geese at "the Homestead," but the rest of the flock will move to the new location. I plan on getting serious about eggs sales and breeding. I know not many folks can afford to do this (and I wouldn't be able, myself, had I not been my sister's beneficiary when she died in 2009) but I am tired of having to rehome my roosters or have them processed because the neighbors don't like rooster noise.

Neighbors who live in the country but don't like country farm sounds. Go figure.

We had a Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock rooster.. but we have no use for em so we took em back to the farm.
But then I got three straight run silkies and ended up with two roosters.

One who is incredibly sweet with us but not when he's with other chickens so he's a pet now! He doesn't crow much so yeah!

And who wouldn't keep this handsome boy? He crows a LOT though.

Joking of course. They have eyes!

Here's Albedo (white one) as a baby:

And here is Willow, the splash, as a baby!

But Albedo's eyes have gone really light orange-y color while Willow's is a dark brown.. the kind silkies should have.
