Tell me why you raise quail?

Pets, meat, eggs, and something to keep me busy lol.

I'd go with the jumbos... I have A&Ms too but they are kinda flighty birds. A&Ms are kinda pigs they eat a lot and are messy eaters lol.


As far as where to buy your eggs from... not ebay I'd stay away from ebay. Stick with some folks on BYC, or thatquailplace forum some of the guys on there have huge birds that produce huge eggs.

I started this summer with 90, ate 30 and got another 20 from a seperate source. The guy who initially sold me quail said he'd incubate eggs for me if i wanted. At this point things progressed from tasty to LOTS OF TASTY! Then while sitting bored at work i began doing some research and realized there might be a potential for profit.....i now have 500 in various stages of growth and another 850 eggs in his incubator and we're looking for a USDA approved processor so we can sell to restaurants and stores.

It's now extremely easy to "go out and get dinner"! Besides, when's the last time you heard a horror story about being flogged by a quail?

So far tasty, no plucking and eggs are winning. Thank you for the tip about the A & M's flighty and piggy are not on the good list.

You need to check with your states DNR. Usually you do not need a gamebird license for any type of Coturnix variety. Most states you need one for Bob whites and others.
In IL it is 25.00 a year.

I started with the jumbo coturnix from SamG and eggs I bought on Ebay. Not all ebay sellers are bad - I sold a ton on there with 100% perfect rating. I've also hatched eggs for other people who bought on ebay and the hatch results were very good.

I liked the jumbos because there's more meat on them and they start laying around 6 weeks (ready to process at 10 weeks). I had eggs coming out my ears so I hatched and sold chicks, sold eggs for hatching, and pickled a bunch (YUM!) They are easy to process and the meat is excellent. They are also very easy to care for, not very flighty, and great for kids.
