tell me your experiences with Chiggers

IF your hubby is brave enough.... Take a cup full of salt into the bathroom with him when taking a shower... wet body... then scrub salt ... yes SALT all over the spots then stand our of water for two to three minutes and then take shower as normal. YES it will STING!!! BUT the salt kills the pesky things and gets rid of the spots sooner. Take it from someone that deals with them on a daily basis (we live on 35 acres). I thought my DH was crazy when he told me what to do... then I did it.... I loved him more after that shower LOL.... Or he can go buy that benadrill (sp) cream and put that on the spots... it keeps it from itching but does not kill them!

Good luck and take care of them chiggers.

;)Yep, powdered sulfur works!!! My grandmother in east Texas used to make us put it in our socks and around our waist and under our arms. I never had a chigger bite until I went off to camp and was, of course, too smart to take Grandmother's recipe. Now I use it on my grand children all the time and DH puts down his socks and duct tapes his long pants and Levi's.

Oh, and to answer your question, no you cant get chiggers from your flock. You CAN get them in your yard tho, we never used to have any, and then ended up transporting the little buggers back home from our cabin, which is five hours drive away. So now we have them in our yard, which we DO keep mowed, and our poor birds get bitten as well, but they are not carriers, just victims. I think they prefer mammals but will probably take what they can get.

You will get them from tall grasses, or places like lakes, wild areas, etc. And they make you miserable for weeks. Always shower immediately after being in the brush.

I get covered in chigger bites about three or four times a year...I cannot stay out of the woods and nothing helps me. I scratch until I draw blood. I look like an eight year old .. all the bites.

It seems they have to well up into a blister from all my scratching for me to get some relief. After I break the blister, caused by my scratching, I can put some Gold Bond powder on my body and it dries them up pretty fast but if I try to not scratch them then the itch goes on forever!! Same goes for seed ticks ..if they are in the woods then they find me!! At least, with the ticks I can use sticky tape to remove them. By the time chiggers start to itch their poison is already in me.

As a woman who has grown up hunting and fishing, I can tell you how to get rid of them. As SOON as you come in the house from outside run some bath water and pour a couple of cups of bleach in the water and wash thoroughly. I even wash my hair in this. After you have done that you can just take a regular bath/shower. It does NOT burn or harm anything. You won't have a bite on you. I have been doing this for 20 some years. Here down south we have them even in the short grass and the only way to prevent them is bug spray around any areas where clothes will be tight fitting (socks, waistline etc..) Our archery season opened Oct 1st and it is still 90 degrees here, so the chiggers are still very active.
