Tell tale signs of good laying hens

The next time you check, you just remove leg bands when you identify one who is laying. My flock wears the bands until I cull, then they go a season without bands, then it starts all over again.

My latest flock(30) of every day or every other day layers are now in their 5-6th years and going strong when last I checked. They live at another farm now but I get updates on their progress. The lady was so overrun with eggs this summer that she was feeding them to the hogs.

What a waste!

I can't claim credit for the idea of vent checking for eggs, as I read it somewhere once upon a time. Sounded reasonable and, since I'm a nurse, sticking my finger into places like that isn't a big deal to me.
