Tell the truth - how clean is YOUR coop?

I'm using the DLM. I haven't cleaned it since June. Just add more shavings and DE once a month and rake it once a week. It's dry and doesn't stink. I will be cleaning it out soon though before it gets too cold.

I have to agree with this. The inside of my coop has fiberglass board on the floor and on the wall behind the roost. I also have a manure box, I like that feature very much. My husband laughed at me for caulking the entire inside of the coop, every place two pieces of wood came together and I painted every surface that was not covered with glass board for easy cleaning.

It is my thought, that twice a year is enough for disinfecting. This chicken keeper has the right idea with the happy medium.

I clean the run every day, by sifting the sand with a rake and kitty-litter scooper - but it's only about 10' by 5'. The house gets the litter tossed every day, but I last changed the bedding in April - it's dry and doesn't smell. I'll probably change it in the next week or so - it's just now getting to a point where the amount of poo is more than I think is good. I rake as much as I can from under their house but I know I'm not getting the majority of stuff. It stays dry under there though, so far, so there hasn't been a problem with smell or flies.

Wish I'd thought of caulking while I had everything out today.

DH is the king of caulk but he's out of town again.

IMMACULATE!

The chickens haven't moved in yet

No really, their current digs still smell like pine sawdust so that's good enough for me.
I scoop the worst out & fluff it up about every week, and do a full shaving change every month - but it's a doghouse sized tractor that's housing an extra rooster over capasity so I have to clean it pretty frequently.

I don't understand how anyone in the north oculd use bleach and water. It is so wet here it would never dry. How can anyone leave there birds out side at night as it would take days for it to dry.
Mines getting cleaned tomorrow and I expect to get some DE for the first time. I used cardboard under the chips but I don't think it worked out so well. Also with the cold they've been spending alot of time inside. Shorter days too.
I'm not sure how I'll get through the winter. How many here have more than 10,20,30,40 birds? If you've only got a few that should make a big difference. Mine is 12x10 w/ 30 birds.

We just moved ours to an old shop but we have a steam power washer we cleaned head to toe with before putting the girls in. We also can scrape out with a loader on a tractor and drop shavings in the same way. We won't remove all of the bedding though. After 6 months you get enough good bacteria that eat the coccidiosis oocysts so you don't have a problem with cocci in health birds as much. We've never had a problem but if we remove 1/2 every 6 months like recommended we'll be golden.

Today I brought the shavings, hay, poo blend under the roost into a big pile and it should do some composting in the coop, heat up, break down, kill off some bugs, and then be good to go again. It wasn't too soiled so it may not shrink too much yet.
