Temp of water for winter?

Thanks for all the interesting info! I think I'll go with the cookie tin heater instead. Much less power usage I'm thinking! Thanks everyone! I'm in Mass so I will need to work hard to keep the water in liquid form!
 
If you keep water IN the coop, you might try the old "light bulb in the clay flower pot" heater. The dish base of the pot sits on top rather than the bottom of the pot. It's pretty much like the cookie tin, except the clay holds the heat better IMO. We set our waterer on top of that and never had frozen water (except for one night when our bulb had burned out). But I didn't try it outside....
