I have a second icubator full of chicken eggs. It happens to be a little giant without a fan kit. I am use to using my other bator with a fan kit and I believe I might have cooked the chicks in the shell. They are due to hatch tomorrow and I am not seeing movement. The temp shot up to 105 for about 2 hours. The water dish was full but when I touched the eggs they were very hot. Does anyone know the max temp a chick can handle in the shell and for how long without dying.

I am sure eggs under a hen in Texas face 110-120 degree days so I am sure they can handle some flux in temp.

Thanks :o)

I took a peek just now and it looks like 8 are blood rings. The rest I am not to sure of. I will look again in a couple days and see what happens. I HATE STILL AIR BATORS!

I wish I would have never wasted my money on it. I read somewhere about a meat spot....does anyone know exactly what a meat spot is?

Mine did that the other day. I wasn't lockdown, so I just opened the lids to let the heat escape. I took this time to candle and luckily everyone was still moving. I think I caught it in time. I too have still air incubators. I have 2 running right now. I bought a forced air from ebay but it hasn't arrived yet. I got lucky and paid only $40, brand new. The still airs at my local store run $50.

Hens will get off the nest to eat, drink and go poo, allowing the eggs to cool off a bit. They will also raise up and sorta squat over them to let them cool down. Hens (except my stupid broody) are usually pretty smart about cooling them off before they hit a too high temp for too long.

When I went to bed 3 nights ago my still air was running at a steady 99.1-99.9 the following morning I woke up and my temp read 104.6 so I lifted the lid n let the temp drop. I candled them 12 hrs later and all of my eggs barring 2 still had little chicks swimming around. 12 hrs of thinking all your chicks are dead is torture but it goes to show they are tougher than we give them credit for.

Well I hope the rest are alive. They should start hatching late tonight or tomorrow. Sometimes I could kick myself for putting them all in that bator. Without the fan, it seems the eggs get so hot so fast. One sec the temp is perfect, and the next it sky rockets. Anyone have a fan for a little giant they would like to sell? Aparently I need one.

Lethal temps are 103 degrees for a forced-air and 107 degrees in a still-air. I think you had a close call. Best of luck to you and your new babies!

I had my forced air spike while I was out to 106 not sure how long it was like that..my guess is it wasn't long since it had no ill effects on the chicks and hatched adorable.
Oh I will sell you the entire lg bator with fan I don't need mine any longer I just posted it today.
