Temperature and Humidity Gauges

I have been using a very old hygrometer and thermometer that came with my used incubator, as well as teh thermometers that came with the new incubators I have purchased. So, I have never purchased these things seperately.

I need to know:

1. Best hygrometer and why

2. Best thermometer and why

3. Are there any good combination models

4. Where can they be purchased

I have a flukers on the way, but want to know all the options! Thanks in advance.

BTW, I have about a 50-75% hatches with my current equipment, but a big fat 0 for all the hatching eggs I have had shipped. I don't want to waste anymore eggs so I need recommendations ASAP!

Well, I went to meijers. And they have a great combination thermometer/hygrometer I have two of them and they are GREAT!

I have a fluckers as well as an accurite,springfield, Radio Shack, Oregon Scientific and an off brand I got from EBay in the cigar shop.
The fluckers work by far the best. I would test the temp against a mercury thermometer used to take temperatures of people. Compare the temp reading on your new one against the mercury therm.

I had problems at first just like you have had. I sometimes had three thermometers inside and all it did was confuse the issue.

The Fluckers is designed to be kept in a warm humid area indefinately. It is not like one to be used to read outside themperatures. I have found that makes a difference. I know it has been reported on this forum that the Fluckers has had some problems so make sure yours is accurate at the get go. It is small and does not take up much room in the bator and has both readings on a nice compact unit.

I like the acurite one with the probe from walmart. Then I have all these and they work pretty good only the white springfield one was junk and it's in the trash it was terrible.

LOL..it is funny seeing people have all the different crazy instruments out there.

I use several different ones as well and have several incubators so typically rely heavily on accuracy.

Accurite (I have 4 of them - all are consistent in their readings) I like these in my homemade hatcher unit..sits on the shelf nicely and gives accurate humidity readings.

Taylor digital (I have 2 of these, both work great - this was my first instrument and still my preferred for in the styro bators due to size)

GQF wet bulb dial - This one is right on the mark for getting accurate readings in my Sportsman bator and I love it. Set it and you know you can count on it.

Flukers - Not sure yet. I really bought this as a backup, but when I did a test run I had bator problems, so didn't get the true test yet. I'll keep ya posted once I fire up the OvaEasy again (it's permanently fastened in there).

Gosh, you don't even realize how much stuff you use until you put it in writing. On a positive note, just about all of mine are in use during prime hatching season. Yeek..is that a positive note.

I have that skinny silver one in Poison's pic, which is also a Springfield. It worked beautifully for a long time. Now the temp can't be trusted, but the hygro is still great. I loved it and still use the hygro part. The white Springfield is a piece of junk, like she said. I had to return my wild fluky Flukers which jumped up and down 2 degrees instantly. The new one is okay, but they made a really bad batch recently. My AcuRites like the ones pictured above are good, but one's top reading is a degree high and the hygro reads about 5% too low. My other one, same model, is good. Both probes work well and agree with each other. My Taylor digital is good with the probe in the wiggler.

LOL! Poison Ivy those crack me up!

I have um... 5 or so myself. I'm such a 'c' personality, though, that I get irritated with super-sensitive/not sensitive enough thermoms. Right now I have 2 in my bator, one mercury-type (alcohol? Whatever they use in them now), and one of those from Accurite with the probe-thing.

I find I really like the mercury-type for fast matching of temps. It drops fast, raises fast. Makes me feel like I can very accurately tell what the min/max temp is in the 'bator. The probe is super nice, too. Although I thought mine was reading a degree lower than the other reading for the same thermom (I noticed it in Poison Ivy's pic, too). I guess it gives a really good baseline, though. I think the one I have in there is a springfield, combo with a hygrometer. I hated the hygro, though (partly my kids fault, they LOVED to play with it), and removed it. It's big, with big numbers, so easy to read.

I bought the white springfield thingy to use as the hygrometer, and a seperate thermometer. It said on the package it was gauranteed within 5% for the humidity! Nothing else had ANYTHING about accuracy written on the labels.

I wasn't sure I could trust the ones with probes...

I hope you have your receipt to take it back I wouldn't trust it. You can see in the picture I posted that all the others say 60% humidity and the white one says 90%. That was on my kitchen table and they had been sitting there for a hour.
