What should the lowest temperature be in a coop with chickens and quail both with shavings and some hay?

Any ideas how to keep water from freezing?

Temperature isn't nearly as big an issue as ventilation is. You want ventilation to keep the humidity down so you don't get frostbite and breathing problems. Go to patandchickens big ol' ventilation page -- she's got great info and ideas there.

Don't know how to keep water from freezing, unlessy you use a heater unit that you can get from most of the supply places.

I do know what you shouldn't do -- don't make a home-made jury-rigged water heater! You can burn down your coop, chickens and all, or electrocute them or yourself.

And don't try to insulate the water with styrofoam. Chickens LOVE styrofoam.

Where are you? That makes a difference, too.
