temperment of basset hounds

They are hounds first, short droopy cartoony lookin' dogs second. Those who get along well with the hound personality and lifestyle can do well with bassetts; but that is definitely not everybody.

Pat, who enjoys OTHER PEOPLES' hounds but is SO not a hound person herself

Husband, who is not a cat person, puts up with two cats.
Wife (me) is currently putting up with a stupid rooster who may not make it out of quarantine.
His dog got banished to the motor home for biting our son (she's 15, deaf, and cranky...not vicious).
I''m thinking it's time to look for an indoor dog for the guy.

Are there differences between male and female bassets?

I've always found female dogs easier to train than males, of any breed. The males seem better at going selectively deaf.

I had a bassett named omlett. He died of cancer almost a year ago. He was wonderful but yes a hard head! He would get a whiff of something and if you didnt have a good grip on him, he was gone tracking after it. Thank goodness I had really good neighbors because we could hear him baying acres and acres away! It not fun to chase a bassett through blackberry bushes either

. But they do have wonderful gentle hearts. Besides once you personally see a bassett you cant resist them they are as evil as silkies

I must have gotten very lucky.....neither of mine drool. Is that really uncommon? I will say that both of them will drink right outta the toilet!!! Gotta keep the lid down.....

I can't believe a male can have MORE selective hearing issues than my females!!!! They are really bad!!! If it's time to come in they NEVER hear me!

LOL Mine doesn't either, that's why i've never chanced a male hound! Our two male dogs, a German Shorthair and a Black Mouth Cur, are both a lot more headstrong than our other two females (another Cur and a retriever mix).

I grew up with Bassets. Most were very smart, happy and active the other was appropriately named Meathead. They dont slobber much but you do have to watch out for their ears and clean inside often. They are prone to cataracts and bloat so feed them on a raised bowl. But they are great dogs. Ive been looking for one for a couple years and they are getting harder to find if not from a breeder. I like females because they dont mark everything or seem to be as stubborn. Wanda was my last girl, she was stolen so just be aware.

I have owned three bassets at one time………..each one had different personalities. Since the passing of my beloved Rupunzel I now have two bassets and a dachshund. (the husband told me to downsize)

While each basset is different, they are alike in some ways…big dog short legs they can reach anything on the counter. They love to cuddle, they love to cuddle. They love to bark, they love to bark. They make me laugh everyday. Did I mention they smell? I should really say that the things they roll in smell.

I have had two breeder bassets and one rescue basset and they are all equally naughty. They are wonderful with kids and the kids will never have dirty faces.

I love having bassets,
Sherielu
