I want to get one more chicken, Buff Orpington that will be a very young pullet, so I'm thinking of converting my plastic dog crate into a coop for quarantine. It'll be attached to a couple sawhorses. Looking for other suggestions on what to do or don't do. It'll be located so they can all see each other during the "quarantine" period. What say you?

I wouldn't generally choose to try to integrate a single bird with an established group.

Do you have enough space to add a pair or trio?

Even one bird will need more space than the crate in the photo. If you want to use that as a temporary "coop" are you also planning to set up a separate run?

Also if you're planning to actually quarantine - as in, to prevent disease transmission - then while having them within sight would technically be possible, you'd need to think very carefully about how you set that up and the procedures you used to prevent cross-infection.

yea. I'm gonna do some sort of temp run. Right now, I think the nightime/early morning temps are too cold for a young pullet, so I'll wait about a month.

How old is the pullet and what are your temps? Will she actually be quarantined or just separated but close to the other chickens?
