Never want temp to go too hot, you will bake the chicks. We run our bator at 99 to 100 and have great hatch rates. Low temp will delay hatch. Low by a degree or two should still give you a good hatch with little chance of problems.

Do you have a still air or forced air incubator? I have heard it makes a difference. I just failed my first attempt at hatching and think my temp being too low was to blame. My next batch of eggs for attempt #2 will arrive next week and I am looking for any tips I can get. (I already got a better thermometer with a humidity detector)

if it's off by a few degrees you shouldn't be using it. you should be shooting for temp swings of 0.5 degrees away from 99.5, any more than that and the problems can start.

you should be at least trying to get things in your bator that stable...then, if things go a bit pear shaped you won't be dealing with such big problems. if you start off with your bator environment at an absolute minimum definition of acceptable, if things go a bit pear shaped you'll have a bunch of dead eggs.

temp too high or too low can cause early dead embryos, chicks dead after pip, unhealed navels, and leg/toe deformities.

if you want some help fixing the problem give us some more info about your setup.
