Ten Dollar Watermelon

We just stopped at a roadside stand on the way home to pick up a watermelon for the Chookies.
The fruit vendor wanted ten dollars for a medium watermelon
We were in shock and told him No Thanks
Are we unreasonable? How much would you pay?

Local or mass produced? In the store, $5-6 but a local farm, $7-9
I also turned down a $10 sugar baby

4 bucks max from a truck on the side of the road. Whole foods is still just under 10.

I consider medium to be: can fit 3-4 on one standard fridge shelf. Large is 2.

My DH bought one yesterday at the grocery store for $5. Roadside trucks are about the same.

Thats like 1.20 a pound. That's not super bad for a watermelon here. Especially if not from a box store

Fair for Montana (right?). Highway robbery when there are fields all over.

I was talking to a local vendor for a farm yesterday and I can see a $10 watermelon because farming (especially organically right now) is close to a losing prospect. Most people can get more for the land than they will ever make farming and their kids dont want to break their backs and banks to carry on the family business so farmers are hurting. I will always pay more for local.
