Hey all if your anywhere near Scottsville Kentucky(just across the Tn. line) ,tomorrow is the big Amish sale. There will be poultry of all kinds galore.Its worth a couple hours drive just to see it all. Of course there will be tons of other farm related stuff to(but whoes interested in that when there are chickens!lol).

HI all well I think this year skip spring and went straight to summer. I have never had chciekns in hot weather, what should I do to keep them cool.

I just came in from the run and some of my babies are panting.

This up sets me but I think I know it is to cool them selfs off right?

Just got Barred rocks and Black Autrolorps right now. I'm looking for a couple Welsummers and EE's though. Know anywhere good around here?

Bare Bottom Farm: Just give them some shade from the sun. Mine have a covered run and last year when it got really hot sometimes I would take a hose and squirt water up on top of their roof. That cooled the roof off and gave them some relief. Plenty of cool water and a nice cool shady place where they can dust bathe and they're fine.

Hi ya'all I hook up a mister to the run as it has a metal roof and my flock
stays cool and extra water is a must,I also add a block of ice I make from a gal.
plastic milk carton cut down.Works for us, and we have never lost a one.

Just to clarify, I have EEs here at my farm (ameraucana rooster with a variety of hens). I also have pure BBS ameraucanas and eventually will have pure buff silkies. The welsummer eggs will be coming from Lauralou in Virginia. She is raising pure welsummers (and let me tell you, they are absolutely gorgeous!). We are trading eggs later in the spring and I will be selling off the extras that hatch from that trade. I have two welsummer hens here, but I have no welsummer roosters.

That being said, I currently have a brooder full of EE babies and am getting ready to hatch out a round of olive eggers from my welsummer/ameraucana mix. My EEs come from either a mixed flock pen (wyandottes, buff orps, EE hens) with a black ameraucana rooster or from a pen with EEs and a blue ameraucana rooster. The babies from pen one are all black. The babies from pen two are turning out blue. So far they are all looking like ameraucanas.
