Maybe he thought he was paying hatching egg price??? Wow

Went the poultry show this morning (saw possumblossum & tnlou and some other BYC members!).
We watched a bit of the judging after my sale birds were gone....
We're standing there when I hear a judge say a bird is choking. DH didn't hear what the judge said, but turned in time to see the judge put the bird to his mouth and and blow into its beak. DH turns to me and said, "What did he just do??!!" I told him the bird was chicking, just as the judge blew another breath into it. Others raced to get the bird's owner, you then took over blowing and peering to find the obstruction (shaving was the culprit, he thinks). We walked out and DH was very quiet. I don't think they were able to save the bird (the owner was walking out as well, with the bird).

After we got out of the barn DH turned to me and said, very seriously, " If one of our birds is choking, and needs mouth to mouth resuscitation, it's gonna die. I gotta draw the line somewhere, Honey, and I'm not sticking a bird's head in my mouth."
Poor guy. I tried real hard not to laugh....

Well, now I have to take DD to soccer. Have a great day, ya'll!!

It didn't happen to be a white phoenix, did it?
I personally had to save that bird once and then saw another person do it a second time because it kept getting its head turned sideways and stuck in the bars on its cage.

What a pity.

I had a great time at the show!! Everyone was super nice and when I explained to folks that I was just learning, they were very open and honest about the pros and cons of each breed. I'm always open, but I'm very interested in the brahmas, austalorps, orps, and sussex (for disposition and dual-purposefullness). Here's the issue...everything at the show was SQ, so they were all GIANORMOUS.

I really need to see what run-of-the-mill specimens look like. I would really appreciate it if folks that have these breeds would post some pics, especially with other birds, so I can really guage how big they are.

Thanks,
Justin

Justin, the 2 australorps I picked up at the Amish market are the sweetest birds of any I have. I can walk up to them and they just squat to let me pick them up. And they have consistently layed for me even as young as they are. Their eggs are smallish for now, but will get bigger. I love my buff orp, the buffs are so fluffy and golden, but she doesn't like to be picked up. Maybe if I had done so when she was younger, but the only time I can get her with no problem is off the roost.

I don't have any birds of show quality, but they pop out those top-notch eggs, so can't complain.

Everybody okay? These storms are wreaking havoc here. We have trees and lines down everywhere in McNairy County. Hope everyone stays safe!

We own a hill so my house isn't flooding but I can't go anywhere..roads are under water and houses are flooding all around here.Over 6" of rain and minutes away from adding to that

We had tornado touch down in town on te Nrth side and back in the other side of the county there are houses flat and trees and power lines down everywhere. We have power for now.

It was pretty bad here in maury county yesterday. we never lost power or anything but there are alot of roads closed and flooding. worst part is..... we are supposed to get the same thing today.

We were in Pigeon Forge and there wasn't even any rain. Amazing.

Justin, it was a dark rosecomb type bird (not an OEGB) that we saw this happen to. Definitely not a phoenix.

DH said one of the really big roos kept sticking his head out of the top of his cage and freaked when he got it stuck one time. But other than that he didn't know of any other bird issues.

Glad you had a good time! We always do, too. Can't help you with your decision, since we are all bantam now. But our hatchery BO were about 1/2 the size of the SQ Orps we've seen.

i don't have any pictures that are a good illustration of the size of my birds... but you're welcome to come out and take a peek yourself. from what you've listed, i've got hatchery Buff Brahmas and Buff Orps- my roos of both those breeds are BIG boys, much bigger than Marbles.

i'm trying to nail down a date to offer a picnic out here at the farm for any BYCers that are interested. what day of the week is best for you guys? i know Saturdays are busy for Karen with the Farmers' Market- are you available at all on Saturday, Karen? how are Sunday afternoons for everyone?
