Terrible head injury - is there any hope? (WARNING: GRAPHIC/SAD PHOTOS)

No big deal. There should be a blue "Start a New Thread" button at the top of the Emergencies/Diseases section. I haven't seen any spots like that myself, but a more specific question may help you find someone who does.

Sorry for the long silence - for some reason I wasn't notified when others posted to the thread last week, even though I'm subscribed. Weird.

Anyway, update! Sonia's been improving steadily if not quickly, and is eating dog food soaked in water when I put it in her mouth. Her droppings have also returned to normal, and no sign of infection. But why I'm updating right now is because...

Her eyes have been sealed shut with pus this entire time, when when I first brought her in, they were gaunt and sunken-looking. Well, they've been filling back out, and today I teased back the eyelids on her less-affected side to check and see what was going on in there. I've been so worried that the attack left her blind, which would mean I'd have to put her down even after all the recovery she's made. And when I opened her eye, my stomach sunk to see a hazy pupil which did not react to light.

But! I when I opened the eye on her mangled side, lo and behold it was fine! Imagine that! She's now looking around the bathroom with what I can only describe as bewildered amazement. Which is pretty much what I'm experiencing right now, too. How in the world is that eye okay when the other is not?

Chickens can lead happy lives with only one working eye, right? The jury's still out on whether or not she can hear...

I'm sorry to update with this, but Sonia died earlier this week. I think she may have had brain damage; she never showed an interest in eating or drinking by herself (I had to force-feed her), and never really perked up, preferring to keep her eyes closed and head on the ground. In the long-run, it may have been a good thing - she didn't seem to be enjoying life. Still, it was a sad morning to find her dead on the couch.

I'd like to thank you all so much for all your help and support! It's a great feeling to know that there's such a wonderful community to turn to when chicken woes happen.

I'm so sorry for your loss! Poor girl but at least she had a caring family that helped her until the end.
