Roofing it for next year might be a possibility, but we'd have to shovel the snow off the top because of weight... which is a challenge! I should post a current snow pic!

Just the 1/2" HC will hold snow and will need to be cleared off, best figure out how before it happens, even my 2x4 mesh grabs and holds snow at times.

If you want a way to grow grass without them eating it all before it's established, take something like an old window box and sprout the grass in there. If you put mesh wiring of some kind over the top, they can't peck at or disturb the grass until it's tall enough to grow through.
