I recently purchased a new hen and rooster to add to my 8 hens. I did introducing the hen at night and put the roo in a pen in their coop for a few days.. now this new hen was with the roo at their previous home and she literally has no back feathers from over mating im assuming. Well I let all of the chickens out together for a bit and then let the roo out with them and the new girl took off, screaming from him.. as soon as he saw her he went after her, caught her, did his thing, and she ran off into the brush. After about an hour of searching for her I gave up. Put some food and water out but the brush line and waited. With still no sign of her my husband and I went searching and found her hiding under a cabbage palm and she wouldnt come out. At this point I put the roo away and left the girls out to make her more comfortable. Is it normal for her to be this scared? should I keep her seperated from the roo due to her being over bred?

The roo tried his thing with my other girls and they beat the snot out of him! They were duking it out which makes me nervous because I dont want either to get hurt! Should I just let them sort things out or get rid of the roo.. id like to get some fertilized eggs but not at the cost of my girls.

Thank you for any advice!

He will continue to breed her whenever they are together. Can you put some fencing up between them? Allowing him to see the girls but not come in contact with them for awhile until she gets used to being with the others?

I can and have mentioned it to my husband, so that will be our first step. Hopefully things will calm down and everyone will get along!

You can order a hen saver apron for her on line. That should help her to grow her feathers back faster. I have a couple of girls that I need to put them on, one of which is also bald. I am hoping that it will help deter the roosters too. I am sure she will calm down if you can keep the rooster away for awhile.
